More on the Special Education Service Agency (SESA) of Alaska
The Special Education Service Agency (SESA) of Alaska is a public agency, which provides assistance without cost to Alaskan school districts and early intervention programs serving students with low incidence disabilities. This assistance is given directly to school personnel, parents, and related serviced providers. The majority of SESA‚s work is in regions outside the major communities in the state.

SESA‚s core service is the Low Incidence Disability Outreach Program, which is funded through the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development. The purpose of this program is to provide consultation, technical assistance, and support to school district personnel who work with students experiencing low incidence disabilities. Services include customized on-site training, distance delivery, workshops and in-service trainings, written and video materials, and a low incidence disability resource library. The low incidence outreach staff members are specialists with advanced skills and training in emotional disturbance and other disabilities. Current specialists are either certified special education teachers or school psychologists with advanced skills. Our school psychologists have specialized training and experience providing indirect service to support students with emotional disturbance. They also have met temporary (i.e., valid for one year) type C certification standards, as specified by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development.

The SESA office is located in Anchorage and most specialists reside within the city‚s surrounding area. Typically, specialists make three to five day site-visits about every other week to provide services. Adventurous travel to rural, remote and areas of the state is a draw for many specialists. Automobiles, large aircraft, floatplanes, bush planes, and ferries are possible modes of transportation to get our specialists to rural, remote villages. Another draw for our specialists is that they enjoy working with the Native cultures and people of Alaska.

For more information about recruitment, please go to www.sesa.org and click on the Job Opportunities link. If you would like to make an appointment with SESA representatives while they are on the University of Kansas campus or more information contact: Lyon Johnson, MA, NCSP
